The Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is a natural method of healing when suffering from neck and back pain. Approximately 53% of the population in the U.S. prefers to get chiropractic treatment. Treatment is non-invasive and without risk associated with using prescribed medications. Not only does it relieve body aches, chiropractic therapy has shown significant efficacy in treating a variety of health issues. For example, treatment at the thoracic spine can fix the nerves in the spine to cure digestive disorders. Relief in the neck and back can resolve related headaches. The benefits are endless…

THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS OF CHIROPRACTIC THERAPY

IMMUNITY BOOSTER

Chiropractors realign the spine— Not only will that help relieve pain, but it will assist with the body’s immune health. With treatment, immune cells are free to enter in your circulatory system. This increases the ability of your body to fight off harmful bacteria and viruses. Adjustment in conjunction with BEMER therapy will prepare your body for any potential harmful bacteria.

REGULATION OF BLOOD PRESSURE

Other chiropractic health benefits include the regulation of blood pressure. This is especially important if you suffer from hypertension. After chiropractic care, patients often feel relief in their knees and other joints. Targeting those particular issues help eliminate pain throughout the body, which will lower blood pressure.

GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

If you have difficulty sleeping, chiropractic care may be a great remedy for restlessness. Often times, doctors will recommend hypnotic medicines, which can be associated with negative side effects. However, with chiropractic care, you will not have to worry about such side effects. Adjustments to your neck on a regular basis will decrease your chance to develop sleep apnea. In addition, chiropractic care will decrease your body’s stress hormone, cortisol, allowing you to get a good night’s rest!

DIGESTIVE HEALTH

Our sedentary lifestyle has managed to mess with our digestive systems. Unfortunately, many of us have developed gastrointestinal problems. Experts believe that a misalignment of the spine can cause these issues. Getting chiropractic care will help fix the misalignment of the spine, which could potentially help you resolve issues with the digestive system.

SAFETY

Other pain management treatments, like pain killers or steroids may involve risks, side effects, and post-therapy care. Unlike medications, chiropractic care comes with a minimal number of risks and is considered natural.

Outside of the five reasons listed above, the list of benefits is ongoing. Several health issues, including sinus buildup, can be caused because of misalignment. At Atlas Injury to Health, not only to do focus on fixing your pain, we work to fix your overall health!

Bemer Therapy

We can go without food or water for days and still survive. But if we stop breathing, we die within minutes. Oxygen cannot be stored. It must be replenished continuously and steadily.

The blood circulation system transports oxygen all over the body, down to the smallest of cells. As we discussed in last week’s article, Sitting is the New Smoking, good blood circulation is vital for optimal health. If your blood circulation is not functioning at its best, cells and tissues don’t get enough nutrients. In addition, waste products start to build up. Over time, this starts to have an impact on your overall health.

Symptoms of Poor Blood Circulation

A poor supply of nutrients and a chronic build-up of waste products in your cells can start to show up in the following ways:

  • Stress
  • Discomfort
  • Restlessness
  • Lack of focus
  • Low energy
  • Exhaustion

These are all very general symptoms. If you were to go to your primary care doctor and complain about these issues, they would probably tell you that it is part of getting old and that you should try to get more rest. However, they can all be signs of poor blood circulation.

BEMER Therapy Improves Blood Circulation

For over two decades, Bemer Therapy technology has been improving blood circulation with a non-invasive, non-chemical mechanism that improves blood flow. A 2015 study showed that BEMER physical vascular therapy reduced pain and fatigue in the short term in patients with chronic low back pain, while long-term therapy appeared to be beneficial in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Findings from another study that focussed on dementia, showed that BEMER therapy may contribute to an improvement of blood flow to the brain. This could improve the quality of life in people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

Simply put, when your body’s cells, tissues, and organs are adequately nourished and metabolic waste products are regularly removed, your body becomes healthy and functions properly.

How does BEMER Therapy Work?

BEMER technology is simple to use. It consists of a mat-type application on which you can sit or lie down. Using electromagnetically transmitted signals, it stimulates the pumping movement of the smallest blood vessels. In an ideal situation, BEMER treatment should be applied for 8-16 minutes twice a day. Even once a day for 5 days a week will have remarkable benefits.

Is It Safe?

There are no known side effects of BEMER treatment. You generally feel relaxed while having treatment, although some may feel a slight tingle as the flow of blood improves. The amount of electromagnetic energy administered is less than that of the earth’s natural magnetism.

Can Chiropractic Improve Your Workouts?

For top athletes, these days, how they recover from their training schedule is as important as the training session itself. The same is true for the amateur athlete. Whether you are a marathon runner, triathlete or a weekend warrior, how you take care of your body before and after your workouts is key to getting the best out of your performance. It may even help you shave seconds off your personal best. Can chiropractic improve your workouts? We look at how chiropractic care should be part of every athlete’s training schedule.

How Do Top Athletes Stay In Shape And Minimize Injury?

Top athletes have a grueling training schedule. How do they stay in shape and not get sidelined from injury? Take New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady, winner of six Super Bowls, not to mention being the oldest non-kicker ever to win one. How does he stay in peak athletic performance and prevent injury from forcing him to retire from the game? Some may say he is genetically blessed. However, when you read about his training schedule, you can see that he is dedicated not only to his physical body but also to his overall health. Good genes only go so far. A strong commitment to your health and wellbeing takes you the rest of the way.

What Do Top Athletes Do To Take Care Of Their Body?

Long gone are the days when a pre- and post workout routine was made up of some simple stretches. Reports say that LeBron James spends $1.5 million on his body yearly, which includes cryotherapy, hyperbaric chambers and NormaTec leg boots with pulse technology. Tom Brady follows each workout with a specific massage that is meant to keep his muscles long and soft. Agreed, there are few who have this kind of money to spend on their athletic training but there are many things you can do that are within everyone’s budget. Chiropractic care, for example.

The NFL Uses Chiropractic Care

An estimated 90% of all world-class athletes routinely use chiropractic care to prevent injuries and boost their performance. All NFL teams employ on-staff chiropractors. So do 72 percent of PGA golfers and the majority of NBA, MLB and NHL teams.

“Chiropractic just makes you feel so much better,” says Tom Brady. “When I walk out of the clinic, I feel like I’m about three inches taller and everything’s in place. And as long as I see the chiropractor, I feel like I’m one step ahead of the game.”

How Does Chiropractic Care Help Athletes?

Chiropractic care is incredibly beneficial for helping you heal from a sports-related injury or improving your overall athletic performance. Those receiving chiropractic care experience shorter recovery time from injuries and hard workouts, increase performance when it comes to speed, agility, and reaction time, and have improved balance and power in their workouts or sports performances.

Common Sports Injuries

A sports injury is one of the main reasons my patients come to see me for help. Sports-related injuries to the neck and back can knock the spine out of alignment, causing pain not just in the spine but in connected muscles, ligaments, and joints. Chiropractic care reduces pain and restores normal function. It reduces or replaces the need for drugs and pain-medication that are addictive and can dull reaction times. Chiropractic can also reduce the risk of surgery that will put you out of action for weeks, even months.

No matter what kind of sport you take part in, make chiropractic care part of your healthcare routine to help you recover from injury and allow you to continue to keep doing what you love.

The Health Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Over the last few decades, chiropractic has become a highly-respected health care profession, within the mainstream medical system. Chiropractic care is an extremely safe treatment method and when it comes to back pain, chiropractors are the referral of choice by the medical establishment. For those who may be unfamiliar with this form of healthcare, let’s take a closer look at what a chiropractor does and the benefits of chiropractic care treatment.

What is Chiropractic?

While the perception that chiropractic treats back pain is not wrong, practitioners of chiropractic care do so much more than just “crack backs.”

The World Health Organization defines the scope of chiropractic care as the “diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health.” As you can see here, chiropractic treats the entire neuromusculoskeletal system, i.e. all the nerves and muscles in the body. Additionally, chiropractors look further than that, specifically at how problems with your nerves, muscles, and joints may lead to other issues that affect your general health.

This connection between the neuromusculoskeletal system and the health of your whole body is fundamentally important to a chiropractor. While a chiropractor is an expert at treating your back and neck pain, their longer-term goal is bigger than that: they aim to restore and preserve health.

Why Do You Need Chiropractic Care And Benefits of Chiropractic Care?

For the majority of people, their first experience with chiropractic is usually after they suffer a back injury or car accident that leaves them suffering from whiplash and neck pain. Frequent, debilitating headaches are another reason why someone may turn to a chiropractor for help.

Chiropractic care is highly recommended for back and neck pain. However, it may also be appropriate for many other health issues.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) states that researchers have looked into “spinal manipulation for a number of conditions ranging from back, neck, and shoulder pain to asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and headaches. Much of the research has focused on low-back pain, and has shown that spinal manipulation appears to benefit some people with this condition.”

Scientific Research on Chiropractic

The NCCIH states that “a 2010 review of scientific evidence on manual therapies for a range of conditions concluded that spinal manipulation/mobilization may be helpful for several conditions in addition to back pain, including migraine and cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches, neck pain, upper- and lower-extremity joint conditions, and whiplash-associated disorders.”

So if you have back or neck pain, chiropractic care is highly recommended. In addition, if you suffer from shoulder pain, asthma, carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia, migraines or headaches, chiropractic treatment could be the answer you are looking for.

Chiropractic: A Safe and Drug-Free Alternative

Chiropractic practice emphasizes conservative management of the neuromusculoskeletal system, without the use of drugs and surgery. Some people prefer not to take pain medication, which can be highly addictive and comes with side-effects. Invasive surgery is also something that people prefer to avoid wherever possible. For sufferers of both acute or chronic (long-term) pain in the lower back, neck or other areas of the body, chiropractic offers a very safe, effective alternative to other pain relief treatments.

Can A Chiropractor Help My Headaches?

Most people don’t think of heading to a chiropractor when they have a headache. It might surprise you to learn, however, that after back pain and whiplash, headaches are one of the most common reasons people seek out chiropractic care. Can a chiropractor help your headaches and how does chiropractic care help?

Not All Headaches Are the Same

Before we discuss how chiropractic treats headache pain, let’s talk about the different kinds of headache.

  • Tension Headaches
Tension headaches are probably the most common type of headache out there. When you mix stress with repetitive movement and bad posture, you have a recipe for pain. Most people describe a tension headache as a feeling of a tight band around their forehead. It’s the kind that has you rubbing your eyes and massaging your temples to try to make it go away. It’s a dull type of pain that ruins your day and makes you reach for the ibuprofen. If you experience tension headaches on a frequent basis, it’s time to talk to your doctor or headache chiropractor.
  • Migraine Headaches
A migraine is not your average headache. People who suffer from migraines not only experience throbbing or pulsing pain in one or both sides of their head, but they also feel nauseous. Often, they are so sensitive to light and noise when they are having a full-blown migraine, that they have no choice but to lie down in a dark room until the migraine goes away. Migraines can sometimes last for 2 days or more. Migraines have a severe impact on the quality of life.
  • Cluster Headache
A cluster headache is commonly described as intense pain in or around one eye on one side of your head. They usually occur in a series of relatively short but extremely painful episodes every day for weeks or months at a time.

Standard Treatments for Headaches

Over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen or aspirin can help a tension headache. Migraines, however, usually require much stronger prescription painkillers that are specific to migraines. They are called triptans. Many adults are also prescribed a narcotic painkiller, such as OxyContin and Vicodin. These types of drugs have strong side-effects and can be addictive because your body develops a tolerance to the medication. This means you need to take a higher dose to get pain relief. Often a person is unable to work or go about their daily life while on these medications.

Chiropractic: a Drug-Free Alternative

Getting chiropractic treatment is a safe, drug-free alternative for headaches and migraines.
Research shows that spinal manipulation – one of the primary treatments provided by doctors of chiropractic – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.

Nine out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches. The pain of headaches and migraines impacts your quality of life. Anyone who suffers from severe migraines will attest to this. There is no need to suffer month after month. Headache chiropractor can offer the pain relief you are looking for.

Lower Back Pain? What is Causing Your Back Pain and How to Fix It.

Back pain is a common complaint in today’s world as we sit hunched over our desks or staring at our screens. So many people experience some type of pain in the lower back that we tend to think of it as a normal. We break down what is normal when it comes to back pains, what is not, and how you can get help for your painful back.

What is Back Pain?

Back pain affects people of all ages regardless of their health or fitness level. There are many different types of back pains and the pain is usually related to the cause. The most common location for back pain is the lower back between your hips and your ribs. This is called the lower lumbar region. The lumbar vertebrae form the base of your backbone. Along with back pain, there may also be stiffness in the muscles as well as a limited range of movement or mobility.

What Does Back Pain Feel Like?

Back pains has many forms. For some, it is a dull aching or soreness that is worse with movement. For others, it can be worse with no movement and is typically more painful in the morning after a night’s sleep. There may also be a sharp stabbing sensation with any movement to the torso. The pain can radiate down your leg into your foot and you may feel numbness, tingling, and weakness in your lower back, buttocks, legs, and feet.

What Causes Back Pain?

  • Muscle tension caused by sitting or sleeping in an awkward position
  • Muscle strain caused by prolonged use of computers, laptops, screens, smartphones when you are not sitting properly
  • Injury or trauma – often an injury that occurs during sports such as playing football, or during extreme sports events. In these kinds of injuries, there can be damage to the muscle tissue or to the tendons and ligaments that support the back.
  • A bulging or herniated (“slipped”) disc – this is when a disc of cartilage that sits between the vertebrae bulges out and presses on a nerve.
  • Sciatica – irritation of the nerve that runs from the lower back to the feet
  • Ankylosing spondylitis – swelling of the joints in the spine.
  • Spondylolisthesis – a bone in the spine slipping out of position.
  • Osteoporosis (thinning of the bones)
  • Tumor or other infection that causes damage to the structure of the spine
  • Natural curvature problems (scoliosis)

When Should You See a Doctor About Your Back Pain?

It is not always easy to identify what is causing the back pain but it is rarely serious. If you have suffered a car accident or a fall and are experiencing severe pain in your back, you should call Dr. Michael St. Louis at Atlas Injury to Health.

Don’t Suffer In Silence. Get Help For Your Back Pain

Hands up if you suffer from a sore or aching back at least once a month? Most likely everyone has their hand raised. One of the major causes of back pain in today’s world is our lifestyle. We sit for several hours a day working at our desks, often hunched over a laptop or keyboard. Back pain limits your activities and upsets your day-to-day life. Lower back pain impedes your sports performance and hampers your exercise training program. While we always recommend talking with your doctor or primary care physician about the pains in your back, what they have to offer you is limited. Often, a doctor will tell you that the pain will go away by itself or they will prescribe a pill or a topical cream to reduce the pain and lessen the inflammation. This will temporarily take the pains away but it does not fix the underlying problem.

How To Fix A Back Pain?

Medical or sports massage is often recommended but again, this does not get to the root cause of the back pain. If your back pain is due to bad posture or bending over your laptop or screen for several hours a day, a massage will temporarily make your back feel better but it won’t stop the pain from coming back again.

Chiropractic focuses on not just the pain in your back but also gets to the root cause. My goal as a chiropractor is not only to help remove the pain but also to prevent it from coming back, as well as stop it from developing into a more serious injury. My goal is to help the body to work at its full potential. Chiropractic care techniques allow me to remove obstructions caused by misalignment of bones, inflamed muscles, tissues or other structures that interfere with the optimal functioning of the nerves. When everything in the body is aligned and there is unobstructed flow, the health of the body thrives, enabling it to perform at its best.

Chiropractic Care For Your Back Pains

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek out chiropractic care. In my practice, I work with patients to resolve their back pain using chiropractic techniques that involve manipulation of the spinal vertebrae in the back. In addition, I analyze their posture with a computerized posture analysis and give them guidance on corrective exercises that they can do in the comfort of their own home. Let’s be honest, with the amount of time we all spend leaning over our laptops or hunched over desks, lower back pain is very common. However, you don’t have to accept it as part of your life. There are solutions for your back pains and chiropractic is one of the best ways to fix that pain in your back.
