Sitting is the New Smoking

We all know that sitting too much and not exercising is bad for our waistline. But did you know it is also bad for your health? In fact, sitting is so bad for your health that some people say it is the new smoking. Why is sitting so damaging to our bodies? One of the reasons is that it slows down our blood circulation. Poor circulation is linked to several chronic diseases including heart disease, stroke, and respiratory disorders.

What is Blood Circulation?

We need good circulation in our bodies. Our blood vessels are our body’s transportation system: from the multi-lane highways and freeways all the way down to small streets and narrow lanes. These blood vessels are making the deliveries of food and oxygen that is vital for our organs, muscles, and tissues to be able to do their job. These same blood vessels are also taking away the garbage, the waste products our body no longer needs. Now that you have an idea of how our circulation works, imagine traffic on these roads not moving more than 25 mph. It is not a good situation. And the same goes for your blood circulation. It means that blood is not getting to where it needs to be.

Why Do We Need Good Blood Flow?

Our heart is the main pump in our body and is the driving force behind our blood circulation. In addition, when we move our bodies, the movement of our muscles puts pressure on the blood vessels and squeezes them. This helps to move the blood and fluid all around the body even down to the tips of your toes. Our blood circulation suffers when we sit all day hunched over our screens or laptops. When our circulation is impaired, it slows or blocks the blood flow. That means the cells in your body can’t get all the oxygen and nutrients they need.

Can You Improve Your Circulation?

What can you do if your job requires you to sit in front of a screen all day? Standing up every hour and moving around will help. You could also consider getting a standing desk. Obviously, exercising and working out a few times a week will improve your circulation. But what else can you do? Chiropractic is great at improving the flow of blood and fluid in your tissues.
